Scare of Possible Famine by January 2017

With regards the statement made earlier this month by Mr. Garba Shehu the senior special assistant to the the president on media and publicity, Nigeria may be faced with a situation of famine in the coming year.
According to him, the famine could be occasioned by what he calls "mindless export" of Nigerian grains across the borders to other countries.
Though the nation was blessed with bountiful harvests of grains this year, but the demand for grains from neighboring and distant countries could lead to shortage of grains for Nigerians in 2017.

The government should be commended for the brilliant forecast. However, what measures have been put in place to prevent this famine from ever happening.
We can not expect the grain farmers not to sell their grains to customers regardless of their nationality. Also these grain farmers may not also have efficient ways of storing their grains on a long term basis, hence the need to dispose of their produce before it spoils.

The responsibility therefore falls on the government to procure as much grain as is needed to sustain the country and store for the coming days of shortages as most likely the countries coming to buy our grains are doing the same.
